About the Rio Grande TheatreThe Rio Grande Theatre was established in 1926. Theatre was originally the Hacker Hotel until it was acquired and later transformed by Southwest architect Otto Thorman. He designed the building to resemble the Italian Renaissance Revival style, which was popular in the 1920s and 30s. The building would later survive an earthquake and a fire in the early 30s.
Today, the Rio Grande theatre is the only remaining two-story adobe theatre in the country. It has been in operation for more than 70 years non-consecutive. The performing arts venue is home to the Doña Ana Arts Council since it was renovated and reopened 2005. Located in the heart of downtown Las Cruces, the 422-seat, state-of-the-art facility is used for events and rented by performance groups. In a partnership with Heritage Hotels & Resorts the theatre brings a number of unique New Mexican cultural performances to the Las Cruces area.
The Rio Grande Theatre is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization that was formed in 1926 for the purpose to create a facility as a performing arts and education venue.
